I believe that circular saws are THE tools that every beginner DIY-er should have. Circular saws have wide range of functionalities that are quite useful to most beginner woodworkers. Especially if you are budget constrained and don’t have the money to buy different types of tools for various tasks. Circular saws are also most widely used power tools in the whole world. Probably because of the fact that with enough knowledge, you can do almost anything with it.
Like most tools available today, there are two types of circular saws that you can buy – corded and battery-powered cordless. Personally, i’ve stuck to using corded circular saws over the years, but recent developments in technology have made me reconsider my choice. Unlike it’s earlier counterparts, newer cordless circular saws are just as powerful and sturdy as their corded counterparts. This guide discusses differences between battery powered and corded tools in detail. Batteries have been improving as well, so they last longer and don’t take as much time to fully recharge.
But it’s also worth mentioning that corded circular saws tend to be much cheaper than the ones with battery. So if cost is major consideration for you, and you don’t care or need flexibility that cordless circular saws have to offer, buying corded saws is good way to save some money, sometimes as much as half the price.
In terms of their structure and build, there are two major distinct types of circular saws – worm drive and sidewinder. Sidewinders are usually small and lightweight type, and most small circular saws belong to this category. So if you are concerned about space and portability of your tool, they are a good choice. On the other hand, worm drive saws are more powerful and bigger in size. If raw power of the tool is something you need, worm drive saws should be your first choice. Honestly, it’s better to have both, and switch between them as needed, but if i had to choose one, i’d go with Sidewinder, since they’re more widely used.
I like to order all of my tools from Amazon, because of the lower price. But if you’re a beginner, it might be wiser to visit retail store and pick one in person. If it’s your first time, trying out the tool before buying one is recommended. And make sure that the tool you buy meets all the safety requirements out there. It’s foolish to try to save some money on tools by ignoring safety standards. Our health costs way more than that.
